real life Wilbur's
Before finishing our series on animal product consumption, and being the weekend, it seemed like a great time to pass along some feel-good material! These videos feature real life Wilbur's, the adorable piglet from Charlotte's Web who was rescued from a quick end by a compassionate farmer's daughter (and a very clever spider).
The first video from Farm Sanctuary showcases Sprinkles and Tim, both rescued from abysmal circumstances. They were traumatized, sick and terrified when they first arrived at the sanctuary, but quickly found new hope in each other, "bond(ing) within moments of meeting." Be sure to read their story in the video description:
Another video (with some great music by the way!) from Woodstock Sanctuary, and shared by Stephanie Ernst of Change.org, features Nemo, Eva, Pinky and Wally. They were nursed back to health by Shanon Rumbugh from near death in a small, unheated garage (see the rest of their story). It's hard not to smile watching these little guys and girls explore their new digs:
One more video from Farm Sanctuary you might enjoy features the rambunctious J.D. Piglet. Speaking of the original Wilbur most of us remember from childhood, his story recalls that of another runt saved from the brink of an axe by a kindhearted farmer, the gregarious Christopher Hogwood of the excellent (and true story) The Good Good Pig. I haven't seen the entire new film version of Charlotte's Web, but it sure looks like a wonderful adaptation, and a perfect introduction for kids and adults alike to the value, personality and intelligence of each animal life:
