in the womb

National Geographic has posted some absolutely stunning video and photos from their In the Womb series, including episodes focusing on the conception, fetal development and birthing of animals.  I'll let the following videos speak for themselves, which utilize "state-of-the-art visual effects and real-time 4-D ultrasound imagery" to paint a portrait of what we know to be some of God's most awe-inspiring handiwork, in this case in the belly of a canine:

These clips come from the episodes "In the Womb: Animals" and "Dogs."  Be sure to catch the accompanying photos, and you can find out more about the full episodes available on dvd here.  The "Cats" episode also has some fascinating information about the rather complex and awkward feline mating process.  Thanks to Don Bosch and his SustainLane post for reminding me of the series.

As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother's womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things. (Ecclesiastes 11:5, NIV)

Fascinating, Ben! Thank you for the verse, too, reminding us of God's amazing, mysterious, creative power.

Did you know that the series has two companion books? They're both excellent and go into considerably more detail than the TV programs. The first is about human pregnancy and is written by Peter Tallack. The second is about animal pregnancy and is written by Michael Sims. Both are engagingly written, but Sims clearly has the lion share of wit. Check them out!
