the butterfly song

A few months ago my church was kind enough to let me share about my work with not one sparrow.  And because it was a family night I asked my wife Cheryl, a childhood educator and caretaker, if she could host a few activities for the kids.  We set up a scavenger hunt of sorts to see how many animals they could identify in artwork or real life around the building, and found a list of animals in the Bible to compare to if time allowed, in addition to a couple of fun word search puzzles.

Cheryl also discovered a great children's song by Christian songwriter Brian M. Howard, called "The Butterfly Song."  It has a great message of thanking God for who He made us to be, in part by imagining how we would thank God if we were different animals such as a butterfly, kangaroo, octopus or even a worm!  You can hear it sung by children in this video:

all things bright and beautiful

A family member posted this, and I couldn't help following suit.  My mother sang this to me as a child, and I rediscovered the hymn a few years later through the veterinarian memoirs of James Herriot.  The children's choir whimsically (and some of them distractedly!) captures the song's innocence and wonder, as arranged by John Rutter.

note: unfortunately this video is no longer available on YouTube, but you can still get a taste for the song from the bit older (and much less attention-challenged!) Brighton Treble Choir:
