spring is in the air

If you haven't been by the main site in a while, I wanted to post a quick note that we've updated the look a bit with a new color scheme.  This was prompted by yet another brilliant banner by my brother Joshua DeVries, a gifted graphic artist who has donated his talents to not one sparrow on more than a few occasions.  Thank you, Josh.

I'm also sincerely grateful to Ben and Clover Aldridge, Ali Beem, Mary Fitzgerald, Patti Monaghen, Jackie Pointer, Amy Sondova and 123rf.com for their beautiful contributions to our new home page slideshow.  Seeing as the hint of Spring has finally found us here in southeastern Wisconsin, and with Easter around the corner, it seemed appropriate to feature a few more baby animals this time.  We'll be posting more on those themes in the next few weeks.

feeding the birds in the bleak midwinter

Our friends at Flourish, a creation care group which exists to "inspir(e) and equi(p) churches to better love God by reviving human lives and the landscapes on which they depend, had an excellent post on helping attract and care for local birds during the winter.  "Feed the Birds in the Bleak Midwinter" was written by Joanna Pritchard, and is also part of a running series called Family Fun as Joanna pays special attention to involving children in the effort.  Here's a preview:

nos update, may 09

still fledgling, but no longer hatchling ...
(see the development of our unofficial mascot 'Spoggy')

This past Saturday, May 16th, not one sparrow turned one year old.  As alluded to in a recent blog post, anniversaries are often special to me, and this one was especially so.  When I think of all the ups and downs of the past year, I'm grateful not one sparrow survived some difficult circumstances. Launching and maintaining an animal advocacy effort in the Christian community was going to be a stretch in the best of times, and Lord knows this year has been far from that.  Maybe some of you can relate.

no squirrel left behind

Thanks to Susan Millard-Schwarz (via HuffPost) for passing along this very cute and poignant video about a young squirrel who gets some much-needed and patient help from an older member of the family, as well as a couple of very sympathetic men:

causes

Updated on October 3, 2008 by Registered CommenterBen DeVries

I'm working on filling out the causes section of the website, and thought I'd post each of the pages here over the coming weeks.  The main page was posted a while back, but has been redrafted:

causes

One definition for cause is "the welfare of a person or group, seen as a subject of concern," and another is "the reason or motive for some human action" (Dictionary.com).  As our name suggests, not one sparrow believes that nothing related to animal care and wellbeing on the one hand or abuse and suffering on the other should go neglected, no matter how small or institutional.  While everyone is responsible for caring for the animals which share this world with us, the church of all communities should be sensitive to the needs of God’s creatures (see motivation).
