another green step

To celebrate Earth Day, I thought I'd share this very practical and encouraging post from Tracey Bianchi, a Christian creation care enthusiast and author of Green Mama, on cutting back a bit on meat for a number of very good reasons ...

I had a phase in college when I thought that perhaps I would become a vegetarian.  I had no real reason for doing so other than acting sort of hippie-ish seemed like an identity that I wanted to try on for a while.  That and a good friend at the time was a vegetarian.  Vegan was a little to extreme for my little experiment so I decided dairy would be okay, yogurt and ice-cream were close companions and I dared not part from them.

a fast for all of us

We have just a couple of posts left in the compassionate eating series, which has included a look at the cruelty of factory farming and other reasons to seek out more humanely raised animal products, and also some encouragement to consider cutting back on meat for similar reasons and beyond.  Along those last lines, I wanted to be sure to share a reflection which I wrote a while back called "A Fast for All of Us: the Animals, the Earth, our Neighbors and our Creator."

beyond the taco stand

We invited Scott Williams of Creation Hope to write a reflection this week as we look at animals and the environment.  Gratefully he took us up on the offer, and here's a very personal and engaging look at his history with and reasons for cutting back on meat ...

I love tacos.  Now, I’m not just talking about your average Taco Bell taco.  No, I’m talking about authentic, Mexican tacos.  You know, the ones that you actually get in Mexico.  The ones from the taquería (taco stand) where they warm the tortillas and then throw in that freshly cooked meat.  Then they proceed to add on all the accoutrements including the fresh guacamole.  They’re best with carne asada but I also enjoy the al pastor, pescado (fish), and even the cabeza (head meat; not brain).  Just typing this, my mouth is salivating.

a compassionate new year's resolution

The turning of a new year, not to mention a decade, usually makes us reflect a bit one the one just behind us, and often prompts some soul-searching on how we can improve on it.

As far as new year's resolutions go, I seem to have had the same basic rotation the past few years, and am bringing most of them with me into 2010 as well: I want to spend more time in prayer and reflection on the Bible, read more books rather than just online content, and of course workout more.  I can, however, say that I brush my teeth with more regularity than I used to (only after extensive, and expensive, dental work done this Summer)!

a christian conversation on food

With Thanksgiving less than a week away, it seemed a very appropriate time to introduce you to a friend of mine who is very passionate about animals and food, and thinking faithfully about both.  Leslie Strovas, who finds her home with her family in the Northeastern U.S., began her blog All Things New: A Christian Conversation on Food with the following very thoughtful post, "An Introduction to the Conversation" ...
