companion
Companion animals, or pets, have a prominent place in our culture and our hearts. They are special members of many of our families and homes, and often represent our most intimate exposure to animals. These dogs, cats, guinea pigs, parakeets, horses and other pets are given affection and care, but others aren’t so lucky. Many are chained, neglected or abandoned altogether, without adequate food or medical care, and without access to the most basic essentials such as love and play.
It’s important to recognize that companion animals aren’t the only animals which need and deserve our attention and care, just because we’ve taken them into our homes. But it’s just as important that we take responsibility for their wellbeing, no matter how small or big, healthy or disabled, or supposedly worthy of our affection: every one of them is a gift, a unique and valuable life. We can always learn to be better guardians of the animals in our care, and we need to hold the pet supply industries and animal shelters accountable to the same values.
